CANCELLED Our Stories: “Hyenas in Petticoats”- How Women Struggled Against Every Dirty Trick in the Book to Win the Vote! In-Person

As we celebrate the 100th birthday of the 19th Amendment in 2020, local journalist Jana Bommersbach looks back at the enormous effort it took for women to be granted full citizenship and the vote. History has downplayed suffrage, as if it were just a footnote in American history, when in fact, it was the nation’s largest civil rights movement. Western women got the vote long before their Eastern sisters, but don’t dare tell an Arizona suffragette that she had it easy. Arizona had its own dirty tricks! Bommersbach has won accolades in every facet of her career— investigative reporter, magazine columnist, television commentator and author of nationally acclaimed books. She currently writes for True West magazine, digging up the true stories behind the popular myths, with an emphasis on Arizona’s real history and women of the Old West. This program is made possible in part by the Arizona Humanities.

Our Stories presents diverse speakers who share unique Arizona and local history topics to a general audience throughout the year. This series is produced by the Chandler Museum and the Chandler Public Library, with support from the Friends of the Chandler Public Library and the Chandler Historical Society.
