Our Stories- Arizona Goes to the Moon

July 20 marks the 50th anniversary of the first manned mission to the Moon. This program celebrates this remarkable human achievement by looking at the key role Arizona played in preparing for this and later missions. The Apollo astronauts traveled to the Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater, and volcanic fields around the state to learn geology and practice lunar excursions. Also, U.S. Geological Survey engineers worked with NASA to develop and test instruments, in many cases at a dramatically created man-made crater fields--while artists joined forces with scientists to create detailed maps of the moon that were critical to navigating around lunar surface. Presented by Kevin Schindler, an award-winning educator and writer who has worked for more than 20 years at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. This presentation is possible by the Arizona Humanities.
